Watermelon. It’s a love/hate relationship. It would figure that one of my favorite fruits ever would cause me the biggest hassle ever to prepare. “I LOVE cutting watermelon”…Said
no one ever. It seriously took me like 45 minutes to cut a melon…until my sister introduced me to an epiphany which left me speechless and angry with all those minutes I wasted nearly cutting off one of my fingers.
We eat melon around here like crazy. I even got so desperate that I gave Jordan puppy-dog eyes and a pout to convince him that we absolutely NEEDED a nifty melon slicer from Sam’s Club. It works amazingly on cantaloupe and honey dew..but a large watermelon, not so much.
I have started this deal with my sister..I buy the watermelon and then hint around for her to cut it. The other day, she began cutting and when I turned around about 2 minutes later, she had these perfect little cubes carefully cut and placed in a giant baggie. My mouth dropped, I popped out of my chair, and had to know her secret…so here it is.
Cut your watermelon in half long ways.
Starting with ONE half only, slice 45 degree angle cuts into the watermelon all the way across, like the pictures below. Make sure you are cutting all the way through!
Next, spin your watermelon around 180 degrees and begin cutting 45 degree angle cuts AGAIN on the same cut lines done previously but the opposite way.
One more step with cutting…Once you’ve cut all the way around the watermelon, you will cut lines across that intersect, like shown below.
Now, this part is magical…Are you ready? We used a large baggie, but you can also use a large container. Carefully, dump the watermelon and watch the pieces beautifully pile on one another, ready to be devoured.
TA DA!!! Now that’s impressive!!
WHY HAVE I NOT KNOWN ABOUT THIS UNTIL NOW?! Seriously. My sister rocks. I knew she was good for something;)
